Three Suspects Arrested by Police Officers for Cellphone Betting Racket

Three suspects were arrested on Wednesday, November 1, 2006, by the Crime Branch of the New Delhi Police Department for allegedly heading a betting racket ring in the area. Due to an anonymous tip, the Crime Branch stormed a house located in the village of Barwala in North West Delhi that day and arrested the suspects, identified as Sohan Lal, Puneet and Surender on the spot. As a result of the recent surge of illegal betting activities in India during the past months, police authorities in India are especially alert and watchful.

Authorities seized a recording system, a color television, 5 cellular phones, a tape recorder, 16 cassettes, calculators and other items from the residence that are suspected to have been used by the suspects in their illegal betting racket. According to authorities, Sohan Lal has been involved in the illegal betting business via cell phone for the past 3 years, while Puneet and Surender assisted him throughout all of the activities in the betting ring. Customers from New Delhi, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Noida, Sonepat and Gurgaon have placed bets on different sporting events through the illegal betting ring.
